More ecosystem building from VMware
Following on from my
previous post regarding VMware's attempts to foster a healthy ecosystem around its virtualisation offerings, the company's at it again. According to
CNET (I can't find a press release on the VMware site), VMware has formed the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Alliance, which includes Citrix, ClearCube Technology, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Wyse Technology, Sun Microsystems, Altiris and Softricity. What links all of these vendors is the notion of delivering a user's desktop, and in the case of the latter pair, the applications they use, from the server: the server-managed desktop.
So, whether the desktop resides on the user's client device or on a remote server (most likely a blade server which is where ClearCube, IBM and HP fit in) and delivered via a thin client (that's Citrix, Wyse and Sun), VMware provides the desktop virtualisation.
UPDATE: The press release has now
appeared. Intriguing how the press is able to cover a story the day before it is released to them ;-)
